Gartner Report: Innovation Insight for Decentralized and Blockchain Identity Services
"Digital businesses must establish trust in digital identities in simple yet secure ways. Decentralized and blockchain identity offer promise, yet remain in an emerging state. Security and risk management leaders must focus on increasing readiness for future adoption of decentralized identity."
Key findings from the report
- Decentralized identity services enable people to self-provision their identity records and manage their own identity data and privacy in a blockchain/distributed ledger technology (DLT) application future.
- Several approaches to decentralized identity are forming, but many are dependent on specific DLT/blockchain platforms. Interoperability is not fully standardized and remains immature.
- Specific methods for securely sharing identity data, such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), offer promise, yet standards and regulations are currently in early stages.
- Client misunderstanding of decentralized trust models inhibits design, impedes overall proof of concept (POC) execution and acceptance
