2022 Gartner Market Guide for Identity Proofing and Affirmation

"Organizations are under pressure to move more high-risk interactions online. However, the need to establish trust in the user’s real-world identity must be balanced with expectations for minimal friction in the user experience (UX)."

Key recommendations from the report

Security and risk management leaders responsible for identity and access management and fraud detection should:

Balance the often competing demands of trust, compliance and UX by assessing the full range of identity proofing and affirmation capabilities, and matching these against their requirements. In many cases, a layered approach of multiple capabilities will be needed.

Manage risk across the user journey by deploying an orchestration solution (either stand-alone or integrated into a broader solution) to manage the complex interplay between identity proofing, fraud detection and user authentication capabilities.

Seek differentiation between vendors by looking beyond similar-sounding accuracy claims toward features that optimize UX, support new channels and meet organizational requirements for data sovereignty and risk mitigation.

Strive to improve UX by accepting identity claims from bring your own identity (BYOI) schemes (including decentralized identity) where there is sufficient penetration of these schemes within your user base, and where the identity assurance they can provide is adequate.
