Guide for Multimodal Biometrics

The new standard for security

Biometric authentication technology is emerging as the cornerstone of robust user security, offering powerful protection against escalating fraud while ensuring a streamlined user experience.

Weak authentication methods including passwords, OTPs, and security questions are vulnerable to phishing attacks and breaches that make it possible for criminals to takeover accounts.

Mitek’s MiPass is a banking-grade biometric authentication software solution that employs a sophisticated and robust combination of biometrics that is extremely difficult to falsify. Unlike conventional methods, it doesn’t depend on something the user has or knows, offering a significantly stronger layer of protection.

Easier for customers

Safer than passwords

Simpler to manage

Simplify authentication with biometric technology

Give your customers seamless and secure access to their accounts with our advanced 4-dimensional biometric authentication platform.  MiPass integrates face biometric matching, face liveness detection, voice biometric matching, and voice liveness detection into one seamless solution. Trained algorithms tested against balanced data sets ensure accurate authentication regardless of race, ethnicity, age, or gender.

In just seconds, users can verify their identities with a selfie, a spoken passphrase, or both. In addition to ensuring a biometric match, advanced liveness detection confirms that the user is physically present. These unique, virtually spoof-proof identifiers ensure the fastest and most secure login experience.

Removing passwords from the process also removes the end-user headaches and operational costs of one-time passcodes and password resets.

Protect users from stolen credentials

Passwords provide a broad attack surface with many vulnerabilities. Amid increased cyberthreats and fraud, voice and face biometrics combined with user liveness detection provide a level of security that passwords simply cannot meet.

Eliminate vulnerabilities

Passwords, PINs, and other knowledge-based authentication factors provide a broad attack surface with many vulnerabilities. Biometrics require nothing for users to remember and nothing that can be stolen, “phished,” or exposed on the dark web and used to access or takeover customer accounts.

Strengthen authentication with biometrics

Biometric templates are mathematical representations of a user's unique biological traits. They are extraordinarily complex and designed to offer minimal attack surfaces, making them extremely difficult for criminals to exploit.

Defend against advanced fraud threats

Sophisticated fraudsters use AI-generated fakes to circumvent identity reverification processes related to account lockouts, password resets, higher risk transactions such as name changes. Employing biometrics closes this loophole. Additionally, MiPass incorporates advanced passive liveness and injection attack detection to thwart attacks on biometric authentication systems.

Cloud-hosted data management and storage

All biometric template data is securely stored, with no sensitive data for you to protect or manage. Our developer-friendly SDK makes it simple to quickly embed and customize and authentication into a wide variety of trusted identity use cases.

Device-agnostic access

Customers can use any camera-enabled device to securely log into their account. If the device is lost or stolen, their biometrics template remains secure. Customers can change devices without having to re-enroll biometrics.

Scalable performance

Cloud-hosted and server-based biometrics template matching offers convenience for businesses to decide how and where to apply biometric authentication in the customer journey.

Reduce management and helpdesk costs

Password reset issues are not only frustrating for users but also costly for businesses. According to Forrester Research, the average labor cost for resetting a single password is approximately $70.

Use cases for biometric authentication

Red Check Circle

Account opening

Face biometric matching is a critical component of modern identity verification during new account onboarding. This is the ideal team to enroll a user’s face and voice biometrics to ease and secure ongoing access to their accounts.

Accessing

Account access and self-service

Use face and/or voice biometrics to offer users a seamless, passwordless authentication experience that enhances security and protects against account takeover attacks. Eliminate the hassles of remembering and managing passwords, and the risks associated with data breaches.

Transacting

Step-up authentication

Biometrics are an ideal solution for step-up authentication when heightened security is required, such as during high-risk transactions like updating account information, transferring large amounts of money, or applying for additional services.

Enroll. Authorize. Match.

More businesses are turning to biometrics to reduce their reliance on weak or onerous login and step-up authentication practices. Device rebinding, high-risk transaction verification, and account self-services are just a few examples of how biometric authentication is reshaping customer identity management throughout the relationship lifecycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is biometric authentication secure?

Today, there are several mature biometric modalities that deliver proven matching accuracy for even the most demanding use cases — from biometric authentication for banking to telcos to government. Biometrics lower the risk of the wrong person getting access while liveness detection prevents spoofing attacks. Both are necessary.

Businesses can choose one or more biometrics to achieve a level of security that matches risk. A key advantage is that biometrics almost always offer less effort and less friction and work faster than other approaches like One Time Passcodes — all while offering higher security.

Are deepfakes a threat to biometric authentication?

Identity verification and authentication techniques that use facial recognition rely on liveness detection to ensure that a live human is in front of the camera during biometric capture. While presentation attacks involve “presenting” non-live imagery to the camera, such as real or deepfake photos on paper or digital screens, injection attacks use hardware and software hacks to bypass the camera altogether.

Without countermeasures, fraudsters can “inject” digital facial imagery into a capture device in a way that defeats certain liveness detection measures. MiPass provides a layered approach to authentication that includes both face and voice biometrics, passive face and voice liveness, and injection attack detection.

What are the advantages of using a bank-grade biometric authentication solution?

Using enterprise-grade voice and face biometrics results in significant security and usability benefits over passwords:

  • No need to for users to remember anything
  • Works with the camera and microphone on any modern computing device
  • Faster, simpler, and more secure than one-time passwords, which are compromised as soon as a fraudster compromises your email or your device
  • Immune to social engineering; can’t be sold on the Dark Web
  • Prevents credential sharing in the workplace
  • Usable across communication channels
  • Cloud-based approach is device independent
  • Blocks common fraud vectors, like SIM swaps and device spoofing
  • Mitigates account takeover attacks
  • Reduces helpdesk costs related to password resets and reverification

Can we use biometrics as part of a multi-factor authentication approach?

Yes. MiPass is a highly secure, multi-modal biometric authentication solution. MiPass face and/or voice biometrics can be added as a second factor to authentication processes that include something the user has (like a mobile device) or something they know (like a password). Unlike approaches that require users to enter one-time passwords and PINs (OTPs), biometrics provides a way to increase security with virtually no increase in user friction.
