Mitek Granted Second Mobile Photo Bill Pay® Patent

SAN DIEGO – November 6, 2013 – Mitek Systems (NASDAQ: MITK, www.miteksystems.com), the leading innovator of mobile imaging for financial transactions, today announced that it has been issued U.S. Patent No. 8,577,118. “Systems and Methods for Mobile Image Capture and Remittance Processing,” by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This is the second patent related to the use of Mitek’s mobile imaging technology for the purpose of paying a bill. Mitek now has 17 patents issued and 22 patent applications pending.

Mitek’s Mobile Photo Bill Pay® enables a bank customer or credit union member to easily and securely pay a bill with the snap of a smartphone or tablet camera. After a customer takes a picture of a bill, Mitek’s technology automatically extracts relevant data from the paper bill and auto-populates the fields required to make a mobile payment.  This revolutionary new way to pay bills eliminates the need for manual data entry, a checkbook or even a computer. The advanced technology in Mobile Photo Bill Pay builds on Mitek’s patented Mobile Deposit®, currently licensed by more than 1000 financial institutions including all of the top 10 retail banks in the US.

A growing number of financial institutions are currently offering Mobile Photo Bill Pay to customers including US Bank, the fifth largest bank in U.S, BBVA Compass, First Financial, City Bank of Texas, Ameriana Bank, and Three Rivers Federal Credit Union.  This solution is sold direct and through a partnership with mobile banking solutions provider Malauzai Software and bill payment service provider Allied Payments.

“We are pleased to receive our second Mobile Photo Bill Pay patent today and proud of the advanced technology behind it” said Dr. Grigori Nepomniachtchi, chief scientist for Mitek. “This patent describes our unique approach to the core technology steps of paying a bill using mobile imaging, such as code line detection, geometric and scientific calculations to improve accuracy, parsing of bill data, etc.  This is consistent with our overall technology direction – to reduce the friction in the user experience by eliminating the notoriously cumbersome and error prone manual data entry on mobile device.”

“Just like Mobile Deposit®, Mobile Photo Bill Pay is becoming part of the American banking vocabulary,” said James DeBello, president & CEO of Mitek. “For consumers, it changes the mundane task of paying bills into a fast, simple and fun process.  Financial institutions that have deployed Mobile Photo Bill Pay are experiencing a first-mover advantage.  They are seeing greater adoption of the mobile channel by new and existing customers as well as a significant increase in customers using bill pay.”

Mitek’s Mobile Photo Bill Pay is part of a suite of solutions for financial services that includes Mobile Deposit®, Mobile Photo Balance Transfer™, and Mobile Photo Account Opening™.  All of Mitek’s solutions leverage Mitek’s MiSnap™ touch-free capture technology, which automates the image capture process – eliminating user-error and decreasing transaction processing time.
